Why group therapy?
Research has shown that group therapy is the most effective form of treatment for children experiencing social difficulties. Group treatment offers psycho-education in various skills as well as social support. The intent is for the children to generalize the information learned in group to the home, school and community setting.
What do the children/adolescents do in the group session?
The group is designed to teach specific social skills (how to start and end conversations, manage anger, problem solve etc.) and then give the opportunity through various activities to practice the skills learned. In the context of the group the children learn to give and receive peer feedback, identify subtle social cues (eye contact, personal space) all of which combine to improve self esteem.
Who usually attends?
Children diagnosed with ADHD, Anxiety, Depression or Developmental delays. Some children without a formal diagnosis also attend. They tend to struggle with issues such as making and keeping friends, knowing how to take a joke, extreme shyness etc.
Do I go with my child?
The group is designed for the children only. Most parents wait in our lobby and take the opportunity to exchange information and experiences with other parents whose children are attending group.
