Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT)

Center for Family Guidance psychiatrists provide ECT at Virtua Memorial Hospital.  ECT or Electroconvulsive Therapy is an effective treatment for a variety of mental health conditions. Most commonly, ECT is used to treat depression. It is also used to treat patients with manic or psychotic symptoms and for those with movement disorders. During ECT the brain is electrically stimulated to produce a controlled, brief seizure. The seizure is actually the therapeutic event which is controlled by medications. This mild current stimulates the brain affecting chemicals and receptors  involved in psychiatric disorders contributing to distressing symptoms. Patients receive treatment 2-3 times per week until their symptoms go away or until maximal improvement has occurred.
