Traditional Live Social Skills Group
Does your child have trouble making friends? Do they feel "left out” when playing with other children? Would you like your child to develop positive social skills? If you said YES, then you’ll want your child to be a part of our children’s social skills groups forming now. The goal of the group is to involve your child with others in therapeutic play while having fun and making friends.
Center for Family Guidance’s Social Skills Group is a comprehensive psycho-educational group for children and/or adolescents. Meeting one to two hours each week over an 8 week period, the group teaches such skills as:
- Starting a Conversation
- How to Enter a Group Activity
- Anger Management
- How to be a "Good” Friend
- Winning and Losing
- Rules of Engagement
- Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder
- Low Self Esteem
- Anxiety
- Development Difficulties (e.g. Asperger’s Traits)
Snack and Discussion
This gives members an opportunity to experience success in getting to know their peers and having others get to know them.
Social Skills Videos
Videos demonstrating and discussing topics such as teasing, bullying, negotiating with peers and adults, settling disagreements, accepting criticism and dealing with anger towards self and others. These topics are then discussed.
Activities
A variety of activities related to the videos are used. Role plays, games and relaxation methods help the children experience what they are seeing and discussing in order to consolidate these skills.
Therapeutic Skills
While playing games, the children practice the skills they are learning in the group. Examples of other skills practiced during therapeutic play are winning, losing, hovering, and cooperating, to name a few.
